Sapna Sharma comes from a humble background, yet has leveraged two Sikh Human Development Foundation scholarships to earn for herself and her family by becoming a housekeeper at the Hyatt Hotel in Amritsar.
Hailing from a remote area on the outskirts of Amritsar and the daughter of a tailor, Sapna earned her B.Sc. in hotel management and catering from the Sai Institute of Management in Amritsar, and now works at one of the largest hotels in the city.
“While working at the Hyatt I got inspired by knowing that when an individual succeeds in completing an education beyond high school, it helps to save an entire family from a future of poverty,” Sapna said, holding back tears of joy.
Through the help of SHDF and Nishkam in pursuing her bachelors degree, Sapna has broken the chains of financial limitations and today serves as a model of inspiration to young girls from poor rural communities. Sapna’s story has already inspired many of her family and neighbors to follow their dreams, no matter what the boundaries.
