“When life takes a wrong turn, one needs a miracle,” says Angrej Singh, Assistant Professor, Fateh College of Education, Rampura, Bhatinda, India.
For Angrej Singh, a miracle came in the form of a SHDF scholarship. Not too long ago, Angrej, a son of a farmer in Bhatinda, came to a crossroads in his life. His father – the only source of income in his family – had a serious accident. At the time, Angrej was a second year undergraduate student, and faced the dilemma of managing hospital bills, keeping food on his family’s table, and finding money to continue his education.
One of his professors told him about the SHDF/Nishkam scholarship program, for which Angrej applied.
“One of my life’s most memorable moments was when I saw my name among successful recipients of the SHDF scholarship. I jumped up in joy,” Angrej recalls.
He was able to complete his B.Sc. in information technology from Karnataka State University, Mysore-Karnataka, and went on to earn a master of computer applications degree from Punjabi University, Patiala, in 2012. Today, Angrej works as an assistant professor in his hometown, and says, “I want to give back, to put the smiles on the face of needy fellow students.”
